Seven-Day Transformation:
From Landscape Concept to Completion

Overview and Project Scope

This Kailua-Kona landscape project was a challenging yet rewarding task for us to complete within the span of just seven days. Our goal was to create a large, usable space in the backyard for our clients by building them a floating deck and other features that would make it an inviting area with plenty of comfort and aesthetic appeal. We brought 10 people on-site, including an irrigator, equipment operator, handyman, and maintenance and installation technicians, to ensure that all aspects of the project were carried out efficiently and effectively. With careful planning, hard work, and attention to detail, we were able to complete this project in just a week’s time.

Preparing the Area: Clean-Up, Irrigation, & Grading

Landscape Clean-up and Debris Removal

The clean-up process was essential to this transformation project. The area needed to be cleared of any debris and unwanted plants in order to make way for the new landscaping design. We started by cleaning up the place and removing all unwanted plants. Consequently, we were able to start laying the groundwork for our landscape project without any delays or complications.

Updating the Irrigation System

Next, we turned our attention to updating the existing irrigation system. We removed and replaced any broken or worn-out pipes and wiring that might have hindered the project’s progress. Additionally, we rerouted the irrigation lines in order to ensure that all areas of the landscape were properly covered. This step was important since it allowed us to get the most out of the irrigation system, ensuring that all of the plants and the lawn’s turf were evenly watered and kept healthy. Furthermore, it allowed us to effectively utilize the site’s resources while saving time in the process. Finally, we made sure that all components were properly installed and in good working order before we moved on to the next step.

Leveling and Grading the Deck Pad

At the same time as the irrigation update, our heavy equipment operators worked on leveling and grading the area for the future deck pad. This involved excavating soil in order to create an even surface that would provide a solid base for our floating deck. The task was completed with precision and care in order to guarantee that all angles were accounted for when construction of the floating deck started.

Creating an Aesthetic Look: Adding Plants, Planters, & Pavers

Planting Flora and Fauna

Once the soil had been leveled and graded, it was time to start introducing plants into the area. We decided to completely remove the old lawn in order to increase its size and provide more space for our customer’s backyard. Additionally, we chose a variety of flora that would not only look great but also be suitable for the Kailua-Kona climate. This included drought-tolerant plants that would be able to withstand the high temperatures of summer months while still providing plenty of color and aesthetic appeal. Furthermore, we added a few ornamental plants in order to create visual interest and bring more life into the yard.

Planter & Flowerbed Installation

We then added mulch to the flowerbeds to provide an aesthetic look while also helping to keep moisture in the soil. Additionally, we installed planters that were perfect for our client’s needs. These additional planters were hand-crafted with precision, ensuring that they would be able to last for years to come. Furthermore, they provided an excellent way to showcase our client’s favorite plants while also helping to create a unique and inviting outdoor area.

Placing and Refurbishing Pavers

Finally, we replaced and refurbished the existing pavers to ensure that the pathways of the landscape were functional and aesthetically pleasing. We also added larger pavers for key areas in order to improve both the look and functionality of the pathways. These larger pavers provided a smooth surface for walking as well as an impressive visual highlight when seen from different angles. Additionally, they created an inviting atmosphere that matched the style of our client’s landscape and added a flair to the outdoor area. With these extra touches, we were able to bring our client’s dream landscape to life.

Building the Floating Deck

Our final step was also the most important part of the project.  By listening to the details given by the customer our team was able to deliver their dream of a backyard floating deck. The owner chose to go with Trex composite decking for its durability, low-maintenance and natural beauty that would fit perfectly into our client’s landscape. Our skilled deck installation technicians carefully laid out the boards on top of pressure-treated joists on a laying board before screwing them in place. Once the deck was complete, it provided an ideal spot for our client to place some furniture and a fireplace, which would create a very comfortable place for their family and friends to watch the stars at night.

Finishing Touches

With the deck in place, our team moved on to the finishing touches. We installed a sprinkler system to ensure that all areas of the landscape would be adequately hydrated. This included adding new heads and nozzles to key sections of the yard where water was needed most. Additionally, we laid down fresh sod for a lush and vibrant green lawn that would serve as the perfect backdrop for our client’s outdoor area. Last, we brought in lava rock to fill in the areas in between the lawn, mulch beds, deck, and rock wall. In addition, we built curved pathways out of chipped gravel for ease of access to the plants on the back.

Client’s Review

“We needed to “rehab” our landscaping and called several local companies. HI Landscaping promptly set an appointment with us. Kerry showed up on time and listened to what we wanted and gave us his ideas as well. We were promptly provided with a detailed estimate within our budget. Kerry spent time with us at several nurseries to understand what we liked or not for our yard. His crew arrived as scheduled. They were polite and worked hard, cleaning up the site before leaving each evening. They finished our yard, including changes we requested mid-way, within the time promised. They fixed all the irrigation issues our yard had and the finished product looks great! We are very pleased. Kerry took time to walk through the care each plant needed as well as the irrigation cycles. Some reviews say they are pricey; however, we believe you get what you pay for. In this case, creative design, timely service, a professional and hardworking crew, and landscaping we are very pleased with.”

Through careful planning and hard work, we were able to bring their dream landscape to life with the addition of plants, custom planters, pavers, a floating deck, and finishing touches like a sprinkler system and fresh sod. Not only did we create an area that was beautiful and inviting, but we also chose materials and plants that could withstand the extreme wind conditions and heat of the Waikoloa climate for years to come. Our client was thrilled with the result of their new outdoor oasis.
