Creating a beautiful and natural landscape in Hawaii is both an art and a science. With the right combination of landscape design elements, homeowners can create stunning outdoor spaces that are both visually pleasing and functional. This project was recently completed at a residential property in Kailua-Kona and featured lava rock retaining walls with an access ramp, planter boxes, living fences with lilikoi vine, irrigation system upgrades, and much more. The primary goal of the project was to create a solid pathway that gave homeowners easy access to the bottom part of their property. Followed by a secondary goal of transforming the property into a well-organized and aesthetically pleasing outdoor living space with custom planter boxes and a living fence with lilikoi vine. Overview of the Landscape Project
This project aimed to create a stunning outdoor living space on a residential property in Kailua-Kona. The scope of the project included building retaining rock walls with a concrete ramp at an angle to access the lower part of the yard, installing irrigation pipes for several faucets and watering stations, placing lava rock as a ground cover, constructing wooden planter boxes filled with organic soil, and building a solid structure for the lilikoi fence. In addition to these elements, the project also included an upgrade of the irrigation controller and the installation of some potted plants to provide privacy from neighbors. The final result was an elegant big island landscape that was visually stunning and functional for the homeowners.
Building the Retaining Walls and Ramp
The project started with the construction of retaining rock walls that were designed specifically for a concrete ramp going down at an angle to the lower part of the yard. This was followed by creating a rail system made of Ohia wood that fit seamlessly together and finished off the pathway with a polished look. While the retaining walls were being built our Hawaii irrigation system experts were busy fitting irrigation pipes together down the slope to provide several faucets and watering stations for the planter boxes and the fruit trees.
Adding Lava Rock, Irrigation, and Weed Barrier
Following the completion of the retainer wall construction, irrigation and plants were installed on the slope. Next, landscapers laid down weed barrier fabric to keep the area maintenance-free. We utilized pathway access and added pineapple plants within arm’s reach along the ramp. Finally, we placed 20,000 pounds of lava rock as a ground cover for a one-of-a-kind look, that rock also acts as a stabilizer of a slope to reduce erosion, and deterioration. Furthermore, installing lava rock ground cover allows for easy future access to the plants on the slope of the retaining wall once they are ready for trimming.
Installing Planter Boxes and Lilikoi Living Fence
With the retaining wall complete and access to the lower part of the yard established, we moved on to installing planter boxes for organic farming and a living fence with lilikoi vine. For the custom-built planter boxes, we used 4×6 lumber stained for protection to create four 4×12 boxes filled with premium topsoil. The lower part of the yard also got 6×6 posts set into the ground and a metal mesh frame with stained wood to support the weight of the growing vines. Finally, we upgraded the irrigation controller and ran additional irrigation lines for the existing plants. To finish off the project, potted plants were placed around the property to improve privacy from neighbors.
