Big Island Backyard Makeover:
Bamboo Removal and Re-Landscaping

This backyard landscaping project was a challenging and rewarding experience for the Hawaii Landscaping team. Located in Kailua-Kona on the big island of Hawaii, this property had been overgrown with bamboo, requiring our landscapers to remove over 60,000 pounds of bamboo before any landscaping could take place. Working around existing features like walls and posts, our crew used an excavator to pull out the root balls and haul away the invasive plants. With careful planning, hard work, engineering, and landscape design we were able to give this backyard a completely new look and feel.

Project Goals & Scope

Our goal for this Kailua-Kona landscape project was to create a safe and inviting backyard living space that melded with the existing landscape. To achieve this, we cleared away the bamboo, regraded the area, added topsoil, and installed irrigation. We then transplanted a variety of native plants and potted plants from the homeowner’s collection as well as two mature palms to create a living separation between the lawn and fence. We also added edging, lava rocks, and pavers to create unique borders that accentuated the design of the property. Finally, we installed a gate for access to the backyard.

Invasive Plant & Bamboo Removal

Removing the invasive bamboo was one of the biggest challenges of this project. Bamboo is a very hardy and fast-growing plant, and its roots grow deep into the ground making it difficult to remove. Our crew needed an excavator in order to pull out the root balls, which took a full week of hard work. Additionally, it was important to make sure that any existing features like walls and posts on the property were not damaged during this process. With careful planning and engineering, we were able to successfully clear away the bamboo without causing damage or disruption to the surrounding landscape.

Bamboo Fence Installation

Once the bamboo was cleared away, we needed to add security and privacy to the backyard. To do this, our team installed a fence and gate around the perimeter of the property. We drilled holes into the pre-existing wall in order to install posts for the fence, which we ensured would blend with the existing landscape. The gate provided access to the back of the property, and we made sure to design it in a way that it would fit seamlessly with the rest of the fence. This gate added an extra layer of security while also maintaining the aesthetic appeal of the property.

Backyard Landscaping & Clean-up

Following the bamboo removal and the fence installation, it was time for our team to clean up the property and prepare the area for landscaping. We regraded the yard, added new topsoil, and installed an irrigation system to ensure that all of the plants had adequate water. To finish off the look, we added edging, lava rocks, and river rocks around the plants to give the landscaping an extra layer of definition. We also added pavers along pathways to create a more inviting atmosphere for the homeowners and their guests.
